Southern Illinois Wine Culture

Establishing itself as the first commercial winegrape vineyard in Southern Illinois, the founder of Owl Creek Vineyard, Ted Wichmann, planted Owl Creek Vineyard’s first winegrape vines in 1980. Ted, along with the Renzaglia family, molded the Southern Illinois wine country and helped create the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail as a way to bring regional Southern Illinois wines to the forefront of global wine culture.

Wichmann also helped usher in Shawnee Hills’ legal recognition as an AVA (American Viticulture Area). This recognition identifies the Shawnee Hills area as a production area for one-of-a-kind grapes. Now owned by the Genung family, Owl Creek Vineyards remain focused on creating unique wines with integrity to please an ever growing audience of wine enthusiasts.

Owl Creek Vineyard Wines

Owl Creek Vineyard produces 10 high quality wines that are sure to excite the senses and are produced from grapes unique to the Southern Illinois AVA. These high quality grapes hail from the Loire Valley in France which has similar climate and soil composition as the Shawnee Hills.

Taste Owl Creek’s Seyval Blanc, a fruity and crisp semi-dry white wine crafted from Seyval Blanc grapes that have been aged in stainless steel for 12 months. These wonderful French Hybrid grapes make up only part of a wide variety of wines offered at Vineyards along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail.
