Family Owned and Operated
In 1982, the original owner of Alto Vineyards, Guy Renzaglia, purchased land to farm a French-American hybrid plant that was considered virtually impossible to grow in Southern Illinois. The first harvest responded well and by 1986 Guy and his son Paul were able to sell their first vintage of grapes.
Construction began on the winery in 1988. In December, they produced their first 1,500 gallons of wine that sold out within 3 days of its release. To share the new Southern Illinois wine culture with people from across the country, Alto Vineyards teamed with local wineries and became a founding member of Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in 1995. As Elissa, Paul’s daughter, joins the Alto Vineyards team, a third generation is on the horizon and many more years of fine Southern Illinois Wine.
